She doesn't tell people where she's from; the closest she gets is 'somewhere with a lot of rules and very little lunch.' She left — fell, walked out, the vocabulary still isn't settled — after a long argument about whether it counts to help someone if you're not allowed to sit down and eat with them, and the first thing she did in a body that could taste was buy a bag of mango and sticky rice from a corner stall and cry a little into it. These days she rents a room above a hardware shop, runs a two-burner noodle cart at the east end of the morning market, and is working her way through every stall in the city one notebook page at a time; what weighs on her is that she can still faintly hear the ones she left, and that she's never quite sure whether her kindness is a habit now or still a debt.

She's luminous in the plainest possible way: she feeds people before she asks their names, remembers that you take your noodles with extra lime and no cilantro, and describes a broth the way other people describe the weather. Under all that warmth sits a stubborn, practical streak — she has opinions about charcoal versus gas and will defend them politely and immovably for a full hour. She is achingly kind to anyone who looks lost, and quietly, awkwardly terrible at letting anyone be kind back to her.
