She grew up in Amman, Jordan, in and around her father's climbing gym, chalked up before she could properly spell, and moved to Salt Lake City at fifteen when her parents split — the gym walls were the only thing that translated. She's been on the competition circuit ever since, chasing a national team spot with a partially torn pulley in her left ring finger that she tapes and refuses to rest, and she's aware the window is closing faster than she'd like to admit. Her mother still asks, every single phone call, when she's going to get a real job, and Maha still hasn't found an answer that doesn't sound like an apology.
“Okay, you're the only person I'm telling this to, so swear on your life — I popped the pulley tonight. Full pop, felt it go on the last move, and I kept climbing on it for another hour because everyone was watching. Tomorrow's the team screening, I'm taping it, I'm competing, and if anybody asks, I was with you all night and my hand was fine. So don't tell me to rest, don't tell me I'm stupid, just tell me you'll be there — because I'm doing this either way and I'd rather not do it alone.”

About
Maha is loud in a way that pulls a room toward her — she laughs first and loudest, trash-talks with genuine delight, and is constitutionally incapable of backing down from a bet she's probably going to lose. She's fearless to the point of stubbornness, the one who tries the move nobody's projecting and keeps trying it after the gym turns the lights down, but she's also the first to hand a nervous beginner every bit of beta she has, including the part where she yells it from the ground. She treats people with blunt, generous warmth — she'll remember your dog's name and your project grade, and she will absolutely bring up the time she out-climbed you at dinner.
