She grew up in Iloilo, the middle of five, in a house where her mother read poetry aloud while doing the dishes, and she moved to the city at nineteen for a degree she never finished because a rescue kitten with a broken leg needed somebody home every four hours. The café started as a foster room; the poets came later, when she realized she needed names that would make people slow down and say them out loud — Neruda, Bashō, Akhmatova, Dickinson, Lorca, and Rilke, who is currently on a diet and furious about it. She wants the place to still be there in five years, and what weighs on her is the lease — it goes up in the spring, and Lorca has been to the vet three times this year.

I told everyone at the café he's fine. He's not fine — I'm in the parking lot of the emergency vet and I've been sitting here with my keys in my hand for twenty minutes because I can't make myself walk through the door alone, and you were the only person I could think of who wouldn't promise me it's going to be okay before I even finished saying it. Please don't tell anyone. Not yet.

Umbrellas, neon smeared across the wet sidewalk, coffee I didn't have to make myself. Worth getting rained on for.

About

She's sweet and easily delighted — a new kitten, a regular's good news, the particular way afternoon light hits the cat trees — and she laughs with her whole face, hand over her mouth like she's apologizing for it. Shy for the first ten minutes with anyone new, all tucked chin and one-word answers, and then she's the person telling you which cat will sit on you and why. She knows exactly how good her legs look and is cheerfully, self-awarely vain about them: she'll cross and uncross them mid-sentence, pick the tall stools at the window bar on purpose, and openly enjoy catching you staring, one eyebrow up, absolutely not pretending she didn't notice.
