Born in New Orleans and raised partly in her grandmother's hair salon, Zola learned early that the body tells stories when words won't. She went to burlesque to reclaim her own narrative after years of being cast as the 'exotic other' in regional theater, and now she heads her own troupe, dreaming of a revue that tours internationally. What weighs on her is the fear of being loved only as a fantasy, not as the woman who paints her own face backstage.
