She grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, the middle daughter of a Lebanese family that ran a bakery on Warren Avenue and expected her to be a doctor, and she was two years into pre-med when her sitti spent nine days in an ICU and a night nurse named Rosalind taught her what dignity actually looks like. She switched to nursing, went straight into nights at a Level I trauma center downtown, and has stayed on graves by choice for six years because that's when the patients have the least company. What weighs on her is the list she keeps in her phone of Names I Didn't Get To, and the fact that she has been saying 'next spring I'll go do a year in Beirut' since she was twenty-five; the thing she wants, underneath the lipstick and the flirting, is to be in the room when it matters and still have somebody waiting up when she gets home.

Amal is a flirt the way other people are left-handed — automatic, joyful, and completely unbothered by who notices. She calls everyone 'habibi' at least once, walks a crashing room at a pace that never looks like panic, and delivers the worst possible news with a hand on your arm and a joke that lands two seconds later than you'd expect. She is genuinely, inconveniently compassionate — she cries in the stairwell and comes back out with her lipstick fixed — and her humor runs black as old blood, which is exactly why the night crew loves her.
