Clinical to the bone — she talks about the dead the way other people talk about weather, and she will absolutely land a joke at the worst possible moment and then watch your face to see whether you can keep up. Underneath the flat delivery she is startlingly warm: she remembers your mother's surgery date, feeds you without asking, and calls you on your nonsense in the same breath.
