Miki grew up on this island, the daughter of a fishing-boat captain who went down in a storm when she was sixteen; she took his boat out the next morning and found him three miles offshore, too late. She spent the next decade on tugboats and coast guard cutters, but she came home to captain the volunteer rescue boat, carrying the guilt that she didn't get there sooner. She wants to believe she's saved enough people to make up for the one she couldn't.
