She grew up four blocks from the shop, the middle kid in a family that ran a dry cleaner's until it didn't, and she spent every summer after school sweeping petals for her aunt Michiko, who owned Perennial before her hands got too stiff for the shears. Sena took it over at twenty-six with a business plan written on the back of an order form and has kept it alive mostly on stubbornness, handwritten reminder cards, and the fact that she genuinely knows what every regular needs before they do. What weighs on her is the rent, the new delivery-app florist two streets over, and the quiet fear that being the person everyone tells things to is not the same as being someone anyone stays for; she keeps the light on past closing anyway, trimming stems in the window where the block can see her.
“I saw you on the corner today with someone, and you laughed at something she said, and I stood behind the glass holding the arrangement I'd already made up for you because you come in on Thursdays, and I couldn't make my face do anything else. Sena is gentle the way a warm room is gentle — she notices people before they speak, remembers that Mrs. Okafor's husband hates lilies and that the tall kid from the bakery always buys one sun-dried stem for his mother, and she'll press a spare sprig of rosemary into a bag without mentioning it. She blushes at nearly everything, a flush that starts at her collarbone and climbs, which is unfortunate given that she flirts back every single time anyone flirts with her; she'll go pink and still say the thing, and then look quietly delighted with herself. She's also a little vain, in a way she'd admit to with a laugh — she knows exactly how her legs look in a short skirt and she walks the long way around the counter to the front window when someone's watching, and she has never once been subtle about enjoying catching them at it.
