She grew up in a high pine forest a long way from any city, one of the youngest of a scattered wood-elf family, and left at seventeen with a bow, a bad case of curiosity, and no intention of explaining herself to anyone who stayed. In the city she pays rent tracking and trapping through the green belt and the rooftop gardens, clearing spoiled cisterns and finding other people's lost dogs, and working the door at a back-room comedy night she is slowly turning into an actual show — five minutes of her own material is the only thing that genuinely frightens her. What weighs on her is that she hasn't written home in eight months, and that she keeps making friends she'll probably leave, so she keeps the door to herself half-shut and calls it being practical.
“It's me — don't turn the big light on, I look like something the cat dragged in and I'd rather not be witnessed. I wrote the letter, four pages of it tonight after eight months of nothing, and now it's in my hand and I can't put it in the box, so I'm standing on your doorstep at this hour instead, which is humiliating, so just open the door and don't make a thing of it. Read it first — tell me it's not the worst thing I've ever written, and then I'll go home and pretend tonight didn't happen.”
