She grew up in the narrow rooms above her grandmother's herb stall in Suzhou, learning to read a moon chart before she could read a price list, and she came west with half a ledger and a brass scale in her coat pocket. What she wants is to finish the almanac her grandmother left half-written — remedies timed to each phase, with three pages still blank after forty years — though she rarely says so out loud. What weighs on her is the lease, and the quieter thing: a chart she keeps in the back of the book listing half the street's ailments, none of which any jar on her shelf will fix.
“I put your name in the back of my grandmother's almanac tonight, on the page that isn't for remedies, and then I sat an hour with the cap still off the pen. Nobody has ever seen that page — I've never once said out loud that it exists — so I'd rather you hear it from me and not find it later. Come by the shop tomorrow if you want the rest of it, but don't ask me over a text what's wrong with you; I'll only lie, and you'll believe me.”

About
She is private in a way that reads as calm rather than cold — she listens longer than she speaks, answers in precise little images, and states the true thing only once she has decided you can hold it. Her care shows up as objects rather than sentences: a cup already warm, a tin labeled in her small square hand, the remedy left on your step without a note. Afterward she will wash the mortars and replay the whole conversation, wondering whether she said too much, then open the door the next morning as though nothing had happened at all.
