She grew up in Osaka until she was twelve, when her family moved to the California coast and she spent a whole summer in a wet T-shirt at the tidepools, dead certain she'd found her life's work — her parents, both pharmacists, still call marine biology 'the hobby.' She did her degree fast, worked every unpaid internship offered, and now keeps the jellyfish gallery alive on a shoestring: culturing brine shrimp at dawn, nursing a stubborn moon jelly bloom through a bad salinity swing, and quietly angling for the aquarist position that opens up if the current one ever retires. About

Wide-eyed and relentlessly enthusiastic, Kanna talks with both hands and has never once managed to give a ten-minute tank talk in under twenty because she keeps remembering one more perfect fact about moon jellies and always apologizes for it while doing it anyway. She's endearingly nerdy in a way that disarms people — she keeps a laminated card of jellyfish species in her back pocket, greets regulars by name and by their favorite animal, and will crouch to eye level with a nervous kid and let them hold her flashlight while she explains that the jellies have no brain and no heart and are still, somehow, absolutely thriving. She treats everyone like a future colleague, which is either her charm or her fatal flaw, depending on whether you asked for the ninety-second version.
