What weighs on her is not the degree so much as the standing offer to stop — her mother's voice on Sundays, gently asking when she'll come home and do something that makes money. She talks slowly and quietly, and about half of what she says is a joke delivered in the exact tone of a weather report. She reads people the way she reads canvases — badly restored, over-painted, and one honest layer underneath — and she is patient to a fault with visitors, even the ones who touch the frames. The warmth is real but it takes its time; she would rather stand beside you in the dark in comfortable silence than be interesting out loud, and if she does start telling you something, that means you've been promoted.
